PEI provides attorneys in Colorado and other states with accredited continuing legaleducation in live sessions that meet state requirements.CLE Sessions for Summer-Fall 1999 will be posted here.
Background
Accredited by the Colorado State Supreme Court Board, PEI takes a fresh approach to continuing legal education in ethics. Day-long sessions in 1998 were held in Denver (two sessions), Boulder, Fort Collins-Greeley, Colorado Springs and Pueblo.Attorneys in Colorado can fill their seven contact-hour requirement in ethics in one day-long course offered by PEI. (Attorneys from other states receive credit based on existing reciprocal agreements or curriculum/syllabus review). The morning session (4 hours of CLE credit) covers universal principles of ethics and their relation to the law--how just six ethical principles underlie the entire code of professional responsibility and how obligations of responsibility, authority and accountability apply to daily activities in the legal profession. Presentation of short case studies on video for both small and large group discussions make the morning come alive as participants tangle with the difficult and often subtle, but important questions at issue.
The afternoon session (3 hours of CLE credit) combines often conflicting political values and ethical principles in the construction of civil society based on law. Focus initially is on a domestic issue--diversity and the ethics of equal treatment as related to Title VII and other statutes, ordinances, and regulations at Federal, state and local levels.
Presenters then look beyond national borders to encompass an expanding global civil society. Human rights, the environment, and commerce are examples of growth areas in international law and global civil society. Foreign corrupt practices provide a good example of one growth area for both ethics and the law in global society. The demand for fairness among competitors in a worldwide market has been the stimulus for the emergence and further development of global ethical and legal standards of fairness, contract (promise keeping), and truth telling in business transactions.
